SUMMARY:Bridging the Gap: Building a Movement through Partnership\, Prevention\, Protection\, and Prosecution
DESCRIPTION:Human trafficking is a complex issue that impacts millions of individuals\, families\, and communities globally. Yet too often it is discussed as a solitary phenomenon without taking into consideration the multiple factors that create vulnerability or the composite response necessary to successfully address the needs of victims and survivors. This year’s conference embraces intersectionality: a framework that examines overlapping oppressions. \nThe Freedom Network’s 14th annual conference\, Bridging the Gap: Building a Movement through Partnership\, Prevention\, Protection\, and Prosecution\, seeks to embrace this complexity and forge partnerships—taking trafficking out of its silo to explore its root causes and best practice interventions. We welcome current (and future!) anti-trafficking stakeholders to join us as we endeavor to better understand human trafficking as it intersects with a variety of systems\, institutions and social concerns. \nFeatured Speakers include: Survivors of Human Trafficking and Office for Victim of Crime Consultants; Attorneys of Immigrant\, Worker\, and Victim Rights; Representatives of Law Enforcement and Government Agencies; Medical Professionals; the Freedom Network Members\, comprising of Advocates\, Attorneys\, Professors\, Social Workers\, and Experts working on Human Trafficking. Hear from 60+ different anti-trafficking experts\, attend plenaries\, panels and workshops\, network with our members\, and join the movement. \nConference Workshop Themes\n———————————————————— \nHuman Rights\nPraxis and Research\nCase studies of Individuals & Groups\nChild Welfare\nCulture & Difference\nDisabilities & Human Trafficking\nDomestic Violence  & Human Trafficking\nThe Drug Industry\nFederal Overview and perspectives in Anti-Trafficking Endeavors\nFreedom Network Training Institute\nLegal and social perceptions of fraud\nHealthcare responses\nHousing First\nIntervention courts\nInvestigation & Prosecution\nLabor/Worker Rights & Labor Trafficking\nLaws & Policy\nMedia Representation\, Messaging\, & Misinformation\nTask Forces & Collaboration\nTransgender People’s Experiences\nUSCIS\nVictim Compensation\nPast\, Present\, and Future Directions of the Anti-Trafficking Movement: Reflections with the Freedom Network Founders and Survivors of Human Trafficking\nAward Ceremony \n————————————————————\nWe invite all conference attendees to join us for our Paul and Sheila Wellstone Award Ceremony on April 4th at 6:30PM. \nFor updates on the Program\, visit: http://freedomnetworkusa.org/news-events/annual-conference/ \nContact the Co-Chairs Annie Isabel Fukushima and Megan Mahoney or our National Coordinator\, Melinda Smith  at conference@freedomnetworkusa.org

SUMMARY:The Demand Factor in the Global Sex Trade: Human Trafficking as a Human Rights Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission Briefing \nIn Conjunction With Exodus Cry and Shared Hope International \n___________________________________________ \nThe Demand Factor in the Global Sex Trade: Human Trafficking as a Human Rights Crisis \nPlease join the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission for a briefing on how the demand for commercial sex fuels the global human trafficking industry\, perpetuating a human rights crisis. \nThe sex trafficking industry is perpetrated by two key players: the trafficker (“pimp”) and the buyer (“john”). To downplay the role of either is a failure to grasp the basic dynamic of human trafficking. The buyer is often viewed through a lens of tolerance or even ignored. Yet\, demand for commercial sex drives human trafficking and presents a dire human rights crisis for those who are exploited. \nPlease join us to hear from experts on the frontlines in the fight against human trafficking as they discuss the danger caused by purchasers and purveyors of commercial sex and successful efforts employed to combat demand. \nPanelists \n\nTaina Bien-Aimé\, Executive Director\, Coalition Against Trafficking in Women (CATW)\nErnie Allen\, Allen Global Consulting\nTina Frundt\, Founder and Executive Director\, Courtney’s House\nMarian Hatcher\, Project Manager\, Sheriff’s Women’s Justice Programs\, Cook County Sheriff’s Office\nAttorney General Sam Olens\, Georgia\nKubiiki Pride\, mother of a sex trafficking survivor and advocate against sexual exploitation of women and children \n\nModerator \n\nRep. Randy Hultgren\, Executive Committee\, Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission\n\nThe briefing will be open to members of Congress\, congressional staff\, interested public and the media. The event will be available via live stream on March 1 here. Use #demandjustice
