SUMMARY:The Demand Factor in the Global Sex Trade: Human Trafficking as a Human Rights Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission Briefing \nIn Conjunction With Exodus Cry and Shared Hope International \n___________________________________________ \nThe Demand Factor in the Global Sex Trade: Human Trafficking as a Human Rights Crisis \nPlease join the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission for a briefing on how the demand for commercial sex fuels the global human trafficking industry\, perpetuating a human rights crisis. \nThe sex trafficking industry is perpetrated by two key players: the trafficker (“pimp”) and the buyer (“john”). To downplay the role of either is a failure to grasp the basic dynamic of human trafficking. The buyer is often viewed through a lens of tolerance or even ignored. Yet\, demand for commercial sex drives human trafficking and presents a dire human rights crisis for those who are exploited. \nPlease join us to hear from experts on the frontlines in the fight against human trafficking as they discuss the danger caused by purchasers and purveyors of commercial sex and successful efforts employed to combat demand. \nPanelists \n\nTaina Bien-Aimé\, Executive Director\, Coalition Against Trafficking in Women (CATW)\nErnie Allen\, Allen Global Consulting\nTina Frundt\, Founder and Executive Director\, Courtney’s House\nMarian Hatcher\, Project Manager\, Sheriff’s Women’s Justice Programs\, Cook County Sheriff’s Office\nAttorney General Sam Olens\, Georgia\nKubiiki Pride\, mother of a sex trafficking survivor and advocate against sexual exploitation of women and children \n\nModerator \n\nRep. Randy Hultgren\, Executive Committee\, Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission\n\nThe briefing will be open to members of Congress\, congressional staff\, interested public and the media. The event will be available via live stream on March 1 here. Use #demandjustice

SUMMARY:HHS and HUD National Joint Listening Session on the Intersection of Human Trafficking and Housing and Services for Survivors
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) will host a national joint listening session to address the intersection of trafficking and the need for housing and social services for survivors. In response to the Federal Strategic Action Plan on Services for Victims of Human Trafficking\, HHS and HUD have been working to coordinate efforts to address the needs of human trafficking survivors\, recognizing that housing and supportive services are critical in serving survivors. \nThe listening session will continue HHS and HUD’s efforts by bringing together social service and housing providers serving adult survivors of human trafficking in order to: \n\nUnderstand the challenges facing housing and social service providers in meeting the needs of adult (18+) survivors of human trafficking and those at risk of trafficking for safe and appropriate housing and support services;\nRecognize best practices in housing and support services for trafficking survivors; and\nHelp identify potential changes in policy\, technical assistance\, outreach\, or other areas to better assist housing and social service providers effectively meet the needs of this population.\n\nThe three main questions HHS and HUD will be discussing are: \n\nWhat are the major challenges you face in helping survivors access housing and supportive services in your community?\nAre you involved in or aware of any promising practices on the ground in this area\nWhat are the top three things you believe HUD and HHS could do to help the work you are doing on the ground?\n\nThe national listening session will be conducted through a phone call on Wednesday\, February 24\, 2016 from 3:00 – 4:30 PM EST.

SUMMARY:4th Annual Human Trafficking Prayer Service
DESCRIPTION:By presidential proclamation\, January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month.  January 11 is Human Trafficking Awareness Day in the United States as a result of a 2007 resolution by the United States Senate\, making the day one of awareness and vigilance for the numerous victims of Human Trafficking that occurs around the world.  In December 2014\, Pope Francis called on Faith Leaders around the world to assist in bringing an end to this modern day form of slavery.  These powerful reminders that labor and sex trafficking endures in the United States and worldwide compel us to work together to end this modern form of slavery. \nThe community is invited to attend the 4th Annual Human Trafficking Prayer Service on Tuesday\, January 19\, 2016\, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Ursuline Center\, 4035 Indian Road\, Toledo\, Ohio.  The Prayer Service is sponsored by the Ursuline Sisters and Associates of Toledo and STOP! (Stop Trafficking of Persons). \nEvery day\, women\, men and children in the United States and around the world are subjected to forced labor\, domestic servitude or the sex trade at the hands of human traffickers for commercial gain.  The Prayer Service is a spiritual way to address the human trafficking issue. \nNetworking tables and light refreshments will be available after the Prayer Service.  For more information\, please contact Sr. Pat Gardner at pgardner@sistersosf.org or 419-824-3604.\nDownload the event PDF: Click Here
